For Unto You Is Born This Day

For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. – Isaiah 9:6

For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. – Luke 2:11

Because my husband is hard at work at the fire station on this Christmas Day, this morning was quiet and peaceful at our house.

We’ve already celebrated and meditated a great deal about the Person of Christmas, but as I had my devotions this morning, I asked the Lord to show me one more aspect of the story I had never considered before.

And he did.

It occurred to me that Isaiah’s prophecy was extended to mankind as a whole: “For unto us a child is born.”

But the angel’s message to the shepherds was to the individual: “For unto you is born this day…a Saviour.”

I like to imagine that the angel made eye contact with each shepherd, ensuring that his message would resonate with each one of them.

“For unto you…”

Jesus did come to save all of mankind from the death that is the payment for our sin. That salvation is God’s gracious Christmas gift to us.

But Christ also came to dwell in each one of our hearts. He created us and loves us each one of us separately, just as parents love each one of their children.

As you celebrate Christmas, I hope you’ll rejoice in the fact that Jesus came to earth for you.
