Living What We Blog

Something I appreciate about the WordPress world is that its members present themselves as far less gilded and glossy than those who primarily use other social media platforms.

The bloggers I read (mostly Christians) tend to be refreshingly honest, while still being encouraging and hopeful.

Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do. – I Thessalonians 5:11

I strive to do the same, both in my blog posts and in reality; but I don’t always achieve that goal in my real, everyday life. Ironically, when I blog about a topic, I sometimes struggle in that area afterward.

If I create a post about nutrition or fitness, I might make less than the best food choices that day; or, if I write about the joys of intimacy with God, I may have a stressful, exhausting day and realize at the end of it that I skipped my devotions all together.

For the good that I would, I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do. – Romans 7:19

Coincidental? I don’t think so.

The enemy is skilled at using our weaknesses and failures against us, to fill us with doubt and shame. Our own thoughts tell us that we have failed and that we are hypocrites.

Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices. – 2 Corinthians 2:11

But notice, those emotions and thoughts are certainly not of God.

Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before….Let us therefore, as many as be perfect, be thus minded: and if in any thing ye be otherwise minded, God shall reveal even this unto you.– Philippians 3:13, 15

What lifts me back to my feet and keeps me pressing on is God’s offer of forgiveness, his promise to help, and his never-wavering love.

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. – I John 1:9

For the Lord God will help me; therefore shall I not be confounded: therefore have I set my face like a flint, and I know that I shall not be ashamed. – Isaiah 50:7

Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. – Romans 8:39

When I fail to live up to what I blog about, it doesn’t mean that I should give up, or stop blogging. If I did that, the person I once was, and Satan, would win!

Imagine if the Apostle Paul had given up on his missionary journeys and on writing the epistles. Despite referring to himself as the chief of sinners (1 Timothy 1:15), he never gave up – and neither should we.

I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: – 2 Timothy 4:7

No, our goal must be to keep on keeping on. We must stay close to the Lord and celebrate our days of victory. We must look at how far we have come throughout the years, rather than the times we took a few steps backward.

For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith. – 1 John 5:4

  1. That’s very true that people tend to be more honest on WordPress. Maybe it’s because it’s ‘longer form’ writing so people will usually go into more depth that a brief comment on other social media.

  2. Whew! Isn’t that the truth. I wonder, and this just hit me, if when we are “profound” in our writing or “proud” of our waistline (or whatever) that the evil one sees an opportunity and thus knocks us off kilter? Probably, but if our hearts are filled with the light and love of Christ, then Satan is only a momentary shadow… Yes? You really did a good job with this one. Thank you for the gentle reminder. Blessings!

  3. Those verses are all so good. It’s certainly true that people are more honest on WordPress!
Satan does test me on the things I blog about, too. But I know God loves and forgives me, and as you said, I should look forward, not behind! ☺

  4. Your fine post made me think of the Thomas Merton prayer: “My Lord God, I have no idea where I am going. I do not see the road ahead of me. . . . Nor do I really know myself, and the fact that I think I am following your will does not mean that I am actually doing so. But I believe the desire to please you does in fact please you. And I hope I have that desire in all that I am doing. I hope that I will never do anything apart from that desire. And I know that if I do this you will lead me by the right road though I may know nothing about it. Therefore will I trust you always though I may seem to be lost and in the shadow of death. I will not fear, for you are ever with me, and you will never leave me to face my perils alone.”

  5. Well said! I often think about how I don’t “practice what I preach”. I try, but my writing is almost always about things that I’m struggling with, and learning myself as I share them with others. However, this doesn’t mean we should quit!

  6. About six months ago I deleted all forms of social media other than my blog. While Facebook and Instagram left me disconnect and feeling yucky, my blogging corner has been one of the most encouraging and uplifting places I have found on the internet. It’s less flashy, takes time…but it’s real! Thanks for your honesty and for sharing your faith for the rest of us to be inspired by!

  7. I mlsughed when I got to you question at the end 🙂 hahaha 🙂 Since I “blog” Bible verses I’d have to say, no, I do not live up to my blog post 🙂 But Romano 8:38-39 changed that for me. It is not a coincidence that when you blog about something, it might be a slight challenge for you 🙂 The old evil one will use the things we love against us 🙂 Things that bring us joy. He will try to steal every single bit of that. You might have made those choices anyway but he will be sure to point it out. If that makes sense. It is a way to try to stop you from spreading God’s Word, love, mercy, etc, etc for we know it all comes from Him. 🙂 Sharing your truth helps more people that you know.

      1. Hahaha once again dear sister, you give me too much credit 🙂 My mom use to say I had book sense but no common sense 🙂 Whatever that means. All I know is that I have been on my own in a worldly sense, for looking back now I was never alone. God was with me. But worldly wise, since I was a preteen 🙂 It made me who I am, or should I say who God made me 🙂 Shae is blessed to have you and your hubby, and brothers. But she knows that 🙂 It will save her a lot of falling down, if you know what I mean 🙂 As with your boys too 🙂 God is good to us, is He not?
