Pure

Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God. – Matthew 5:8

A pastor my family regularly listens to highlighted this verse in a recent sermon, in a way I’d never considered before.

How do we gain a pure heart? By becoming more like Christ.

And how do we become more like Christ? By reading his words in Scripture and contemplating his character.

And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works. – 2 Timothy 3:15-17

After all, Scripture says not only that Jesus is the focus of the Word, but that he is the Word.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth. – John 1:1, 14

Thus, in this life, we may see Christ through our studies of the Scriptures and strive to become ever more pure in heart.

But no matter the level of our transformation, all of those whose hearts have been purified through salvation will see God in the life to come.

Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life. – John 6:68

And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. – John 10:28

Has your heart been purified through salvation?  What helps you to become more pure, like Christ?  I welcome your comments below.

  1. Oh! And thank you and your husband for endeavoring to raise children who KNOW and love Jesus. We are going to need much heart-commitment to the commission from them if their generation is to be saved.

  2. Meredith, Thank you for this post. What helps me to become more Christlike? Listening to His Word, then obeying what he teaches me. I must follow Jesus wherever he leads me, doing what he has called me to do, going where he sends me, and saying what he commands me to say. I must respond to his corrections in my life with surrender to his will, and with obedience, if I am to grow in the grace and knowledge of my Savior. I can’t just talk the walk. I have to live it. I have to not resist the Spirit’s voice. I have to not say “No” to God’s promptings. I cannot quench the Holy Spirit. I can’t obey in some areas while holding on to pet sins. I have to totally surrender to my Lord in all areas of my life if I am to become more Christlike. And, that is something that must happen daily – daily dying to sin and self; daily taking up the armor of God with which to fight off Satan’s evil schemes against me, for I haven’t arrived. He’s still working on me to make me who I ought to be.

  3. Great post! I am obsessed with our Triune God’s nature and activity being holy. When I think of God’s holiness, I cannot help but to cry out, “Lord, make me Holy as You are Holy!” My first seminary class, I wrote a Biblical Theme research paper on purity. God gave me a line that has never left me, “purity is a manifestation of holiness and only a holy people can live with Holy God.”
