A Blog-Worthy Story?

Before beginning this blog, I thought long and hard about whether or not I had anything worthy to share. Many bloggers have worthy tales of extremes–recovering from a serious disease, taking a journey around the world, crafting with talent and originality.

My story is not particularly worthy or extreme. I live a quiet life in the Midwest. My home, on seven acres of woods and fields, is surrounded by corn and soybean fields. After living here nearly 20 years, I still have moments of longing for the mountains and rocky coastlines of New England where I grew up. But the very vastness of the fields here, the panoramic views, the straight and stretching roads–those in themselves are a bit extreme, I suppose, and stunning their way.

My husband and I chose to raise our three children in a rural area, because we wanted them to have the freedom to run and ride without near neighbors or city noise. We’ve never regretted our decision, but because of it, our life is definitely lived out at home. We home school our children. I work as a freelance writer from home. My husband’s job as a lieutenant in a nearby city fire department allows him to be home two days out of every three.

And thank God for the world wide web! My husband and I often ask ourselves how our home life would be different without it, and much we would lack. We work out at home with our favorite fitness experts via YouTube. I shop at home online for everything that I can excluding fresh food. And I have been able to make our house a home thanks to my favorite fabric, crafting, and cooking web sites.

In all of these activities, our faith is an ever-present theme, like the weft thread on a weaver’s loom. That weft thread goes over and under, over and under the individual warp threads, binding them all together and creating a unified pattern. Seeking to live according to God’s best plan for us is not always easy, but we are content and fulfilled in our choice for our home.

So, that’s what my blog will be about: what I’ve learned about life in my two-story yellow house. I’ll share my thoughts on home schooling, home decor, photography, perennial gardening, ebay-ing, budgeting, and more. And I’m sure I’ll have a lot to share about what God has taught me within these walls.
